| Project Title: | SRU Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement Initiative |
| Project Description: |
The Slippery Rock University Early Childhood and Elementary Music Community Engagement Initiative is a program specifically designed for preschool through elementary age students. The program currently serves the Butler County Children's Center Head Start Program, the Slippery Rock University Student Government Association Preschool, the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Fiddlesticks Concerts. The main overarching goals of this program are to provide free, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate musical experiences for preschool through elementary aged children, enhance teaching experiences for music students at Slippery Rock University, and enrich the community at large. We are student centered and foster creativity as children learn through musical play. Children participate in steady beat games and engage in spatial awareness activities which help to develop and refine fine and gross motor skills. They explore music through multi-sensory learning with classes rich in visual, aural, kinesthetic and tactile experiences. Since our first class of twelve students in August of 2014, the SRU Early Childhood and Elementary Community Engagement Initiative has reached over 200 children in our regularly scheduled weekly classes and thousands more through our collaboration with the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Fiddlesticks Concerts. Every semester our program grows and students and faculty continue to donate their time and money to provide these free experiences to our community. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved our sessions online via Facebook live every Monday-Friday beginning at 10am. Once again, students invested a great deal of time, energy, and talent to bring these virtual classes to life! Funds will support the following: 1. Gas and Mileage (for all SRU students who travel to volunteer) 2. Small Teaching Stipends (for upper level SRU students who become lead teachers after at least one semester of volunteering) 3. Class Materials |
