| Project Title: | Exercise Science Educational Travel Scholarship |
| Project Description: |
The Exercise Science program prepares students to pursue multiple careers due to the broad range of subjects explored through the curriculum. We prepare students to excel in graduate programs and establish careers in the fields of health, wellness, and fitness. In addition to the diverse curriculum, students are encouraged to learn through out-of-class experiences. Our program is unique because students are able to partner with faculty members and participate in research projects, an opportunity seldom afforded to students in other undergraduate programs. Our students often attend and present at local and regional conferences. When afforded the opportunity, attending or presenting at national or international professional conferences further enriches their undergraduate experience. These conferences are hosted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), an organization consisting of over 50,000 members and certified professionals across 70 occupations including physicians and health, fitness, and sports medicine professionals. At these conferences, students have the opportunity to hear from leading experts, discover the latest research, and network with other professionals. • Sarah Allen, a senior-level exercise science student, presented at the national conference last year and found the experience integral to her professional development. Allen would not have been able to attend the conference without department funding and expressed gratitude for the financial support she received. • Maureen Walsh, a senior-level exercise science student, presented at the national conference last year and was able to obtain two interviews and the required letter of support for admission into Colorado State University, to pursue an M.S. in Health and Exercise Science and then a Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics. Furthermore, Walsh states “ACSM has allowed me to make professional connections in the field of Exercise Science through meeting multiple students and faculty members at different academic institutions. Attending presentations only makes me want to work harder upon returning to the lab and classroom. This conference is one of the highlights of my summer. I look forward to attending it every year and I am so grateful for the Exercise Science Program for financially supporting me.” • Toria Crispin, a senior-level exercise science student, presented at the national conference last year and states “I broke out of my personal comfort zone and stayed actively engaged during each of the free communication/poster sessions. I did this by speaking with many of the professionals who were present at these posters. This was a great professional and personal experience for me as I intend to do this again in the near future as well.” The Exercise Science department would like to institute a student travel fund to provide this invaluable out-of-class experience to our diligent and curious students. Costs associated with registration and travel can be quite expensive, presenting a huge barrier for college students who would find attending professional conferences an enriching experience. Please consider supporting students to experience these valuable professional opportunities. Thank you in advance for your contribution. |
