Thank you to everyone who has helped to make this project such a huge success. We are happy to report that Phase 1 of the project has been completed, and 20 trees have been planted in downtown Slippery Rock. Continue reading for more information about our project, and its goals! Slippery Rock has a population of Cleveland Pears that have been compromised by the fire blight (Erwinia amylovora). For various reasons, the Cleveland Pear was the predominantly planted tree in town on Main Street. Luke Gregory, a senior Biology major in his Leadership Practicum course, wanted to remove and replace these trees that are in decline with a broader diversity of tree species (Hornbeams, Ivory Silks), and help prune and maintain the town trees (Prospector Elms, Linden Trees, Red Buds, Royal Burgundy Flowering Cherries, and Cleveland Pears). In addition to improving the health of our urban forest, this project would also serve to elevate the aesthetics of the town. The Cleveland Pear blooms annually in the early spring, by having a greater diversity of trees it will increase our bloom time as well as the diversity of flower color. His goals for this project include bringing community members together (such as Dr. Krayesky, the Urban Forester for SRD, Slippery Rock Borough and Slippery Rock University) to remove trees that are in decline, diversify our urban forest, and increase the aesthetics of our community. |
