| Project Title: | Archaeological Excavations at Wolf Creek, Miller Woods Nature Preserve |
| Project Description: |
Slippery Rock University students, faculty, and alumni are working together with local volunteers and archaeologists to excavate the Wolf Creek archaeological site(s). The site is located in Butler County, PA in the Miller Woods Nature Preserve on land managed by SRU. Preliminary archaeological survey and excavation along portions of Wolf Creek in Slippery Rock, PA. suggest a series of short-term occupations extending from the Late Archaic (ca. 6000 years ago) to historic periods. This preliminary interpretation is based on the identification of multiple hearth (firepit) features and moderate quantities of (lithic) stone flakes and debitage of local chert, including concentrations of late-stage manufacturing flakes (e.g. re-sharpening of stone tools) that we believe to be consistent with Late Archaic patterns. This project is a collaboration between Slippery Rock University student volunteers, retired professional archaeologists, and amateur local archaeologists as part of a larger effort by the university’s Anthropology program to develop Service Learning and Community Engagement opportunities in Butler County. |
